Strep

The strep test is a diagnostic procedure used to identify Streptococcus bacteria, specifically Group A Streptococcus, which is responsible for causing strep throat.

At Reagan Medical Center, we utilize strep tests to accurately diagnose this common bacterial infection, which presents with symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a red, swollen throat with white patches or streaks.

There are two main types of strep tests:

1. Rapid Antigen Test: This is a quick and highly effective test that can provide results within minutes. During the rapid antigen test, a healthcare provider uses a swab to collect a sample from the throat. The sample is then tested for the presence of antigens—substances produced by the bacteria that trigger an immune response. If the test detects these antigens, it indicates a positive result for strep throat. Rapid antigen tests are convenient for immediate diagnosis and can help in quickly initiating treatment.
2. Throat Culture: If the rapid test results are negative but strep throat is still suspected, or if the diagnosis is uncertain, a throat culture may be performed. This involves taking a throat swab and placing it on a culture medium to grow any bacteria present. A throat culture can detect the presence of Group A Streptococcus more reliably, though it takes longer to get results—typically 24 to 48 hours. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosing strep throat.
