VQ Scan

About VQ Scan

A ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scan is a diagnostic imaging test used to assess the function of the lungs, particularly to evaluate how well air and blood are flowing through the lungs.

VQ Scan Q&A

At Reagan Medical Center, we utilize V/Q scans to diagnose and manage conditions related to pulmonary function and circulation, such as pulmonary embolism (PE), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other respiratory disorders.

The V/Q scan involves two main components: ventilation and perfusion.

  1. Ventilation Scan: This part of the test evaluates how well air is reaching different areas of the lungs. A small amount of radioactive gas or aerosol is inhaled by the patient, and a gamma camera captures images of the distribution of this inhaled substance throughout the lungs. This helps to identify any areas where airflow may be obstructed or reduced.
  2. Perfusion Scan: This part assesses the blood flow to the lungs. A different radioactive substance, typically injected into a vein in the arm, is used to trace the distribution of blood through the pulmonary vessels. A gamma camera then captures images of the areas where this substance accumulates, revealing the patterns of blood flow and highlighting any areas with reduced or blocked circulation.

By combining the results from both the ventilation and perfusion scans, healthcare professionals can identify mismatches between air and blood flow in the lungs. This is particularly useful for diagnosing pulmonary embolism, where a blood clot obstructs blood flow to parts of the lung while ventilation remains unaffected. The scan can also help in evaluating other lung conditions, assessing the severity of pulmonary diseases, and guiding treatment decisions.

At Reagan Medical Center, we ensure that V/Q scans are conducted with precision and care. Our team provides detailed instructions to patients and supports them throughout the imaging process to ensure comfort and accuracy. The results are interpreted by experienced radiologists who provide comprehensive reports to guide diagnosis and treatment planning. By utilizing V/Q scans, we enhance our ability to diagnose pulmonary conditions accurately and tailor treatments to meet individual patient needs effectively.
