Well-Woman Exam Q&A

What is a well-woman exam?

At Reagan Medical Center, your well-woman exam involves a physical and pelvic exam to ensure reproductive organs are healthy and function as they’re supposed to. Your provider screens for cervical cancer and other gynecological conditions to prevent serious complications, as well.

What should I expect during a well-woman exam?

Your Reagan Medical Center doctor lets you know what to expect when you arrive for a routine wellness checkup. They:

  • Review your medical and health history
  • Check your weight and blood pressure
  • Complete a pelvic exam and Pap test as needed
  • Offer a clinical breast exam
  • Order lab or imaging tests, if necessary

During a pelvic exam, your specialist checks your pelvic area for signs of disease. They evaluate your vagina, uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic organs.

Your provider might complete a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer by scraping tissue from your cervix and sending it to a lab for analysis. They check your breasts for lumps and refer you for a mammogram if necessary.

Based on your health history and symptoms, your doctor might recommend blood tests, imaging tests, or a biopsy to rule out or diagnose a gynecological condition.

What if I have a gynecological condition?

Sometimes, your doctor finds evidence of a gynecological problem during routine well-woman exams. Examples include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer
  • Adhesions
  • Endometriosis
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Ovarian cysts
  • A sexually transmitted disease (STD)
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Hormone disorders

Your Reagan Medical Center provider discusses treatment options with you to find one that best matches your needs. They prescribe medication or complete minimally invasive procedures as needed to prevent severe gynecological complications. Your doctor may also follow up with you as needed to ensure you remain healthy after treatment.

How often should I schedule a well-woman exam?

Your provider lets you know how often to schedule a well-woman exam based on your age, medical history, and whether or not you have a gynecological condition. For many healthy women, scheduling a well-woman checkup every year is a good idea.
